Boot Camp and Sawdust

David Sheppard

Things have been busy behind the scenes at CrossFit Manatee in beautiful Bradenton, Florida. Let’s get you up to date.

First and foremost, we’re hosting a FREE boot camp at 6:00 a.m. on weekdays from August 13 to August 31. The boot camp will be held at McKelvey Park, in front of Jessie P Miller Elementary School, at the intersection of 43rd St W and Manatee Ave.

The boot camp classes will be shorter than a “normal” CrossFit class, at 45 minutes. We’ll also get a chance to do some fun stuff that you might not normally see in an indoor class. The classes are designed to give folks who want to try CrossFit a chance to experience it in a fun, friendly setting. Workouts will be scalable for anyone from the couch potato to the super-fit CrossFit veteran.

If you want to try CrossFit, or if you’re a CrossFitter in Bradenton who wants to come check us out before the gym opens, come to the boot camp! It’s free, it’s fun, and I promise it’ll be worth your while.

In addition to laying groundwork for the boot camp, we’ve been spending LOTS of time building out the gym. I’m too tired right now to provide a cohesive narrative of the entire construction journey thus far, so the following pictures and captions will have to hold you over for now:

We had a lot of construction debris to clear out of the gym. Zack decided to bring the dumpster into the gym to speed the process. And then do a pistol on the dumpster.

First, we tried removing the floor tiles with hammers. After realizing that this would take days, we rented a tile remover. It’s like a lawnmower for floors.

The A/C work includes new ducts to more efficiently cool a gym full of sweaty CrossFitters. Here they are: shiny, new, and ready to be installed!

The Official Parents of CrossFit Manatee came down to help build plyo boxes. Here, the Official Mom of CrossFit Manatee poses with the fruits of the first full day of plyo-box labor.

In the next week, we should be able to stop destroying things and creating debris, and start cleaning up and making the space look like the CrossFit wonderland it was always destined to be. Stay tuned for more, and if you haven’t already liked us on Facebook, do it now to stay up to date as we move towards our Grand Opening in September!

Not only did he work for the New York City Fire Department, he was a part-time Smithtown bay constable and served in the Navy Reserve. “He used to say, ‘I want to serve my country, the city and my town,'” said his father, Bill, a retired city fire captain.
